Mizoram University Hosts Innovia 1.0 – Its First Innovation Challenge

The Mizoram University Institution’s Innovation Council successfully organized its inaugural Innovation Challenge, Innovia 1.0. The grand finale took place on 7th February 2025, where 12 finalist teams showcased their groundbreaking ideas. The esteemed panel of jurors included:

EVENT OVERVIEW

The Mizoram University Innovation Challenge 2024 aims to foster creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial skills among students from Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges. The challenge will focus on addressing local and regional issues through innovative solutions and will provide students with a platform to showcase their talents and ideas. Further, the challenge can advance the upcoming innovations within the University’s domain as in-breed startups

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

Students from Mizoram University and its affiliated colleges.
Participation is open to individuals and teams (maximum 5 members per team).

TIMELINE

Submission of Proposals: 31^st October 20, 2024
Evaluation: Up to 5^th November, 2024
Final Presentations: 7^th & 8^th November, 2024
Awards and Closing Ceremony: 11^th November, 2024

CHALLENGE STRUCTURE

Submission of Proposals: Participants submit detailed project proposals addressing specific themes or problems.
Preliminary Round: Proposals are evaluated, and shortlisted teams advance to the next round.
Mentorship: Shortlisted teams receive mentorship from industry experts to refine their ideas.
Final Presentation: Teams present their solutions to a panel of judges, followed by a Q&A session.
Awards: Prizes are awarded for the most innovative, practical, and impactful solutions. Further, those entries fit for starting startups may be mentored at MZU Incubation Centre and BioNest. There, they may avail seed funds and R&D facilities.

Prizes & Awards

- First Prize: ₹40,000 (₹ 20,000 for two categories viz. UG and PG)
- Second Prize: ₹30,000 (₹ 15,000 for two categories viz. UG and PG)
- Third Prize: ₹20,000 (₹ 10,000 for two categories viz. UG and PG)
- Special Categories (e.g., Best Social Impact): ₹10,000
- Those entries with viability and feasibility for promotion as startups may be incubated and offer seed funding of up to 10 lakhs per startup.

Evaluation Criteria

Innovation: Originality and creativity of the solution.
Practicality: Feasibility and potential impact of the solution.
Presentation: Clarity and effectiveness of the final presentation.
Scalability: Potential for the solution to be scaled or adapted to other contexts.

Grand Challenge for the development of ‘Technologies for Primary Processing Storage and Valorization of Onions’

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAFPD) announces to develop ‘Technologies for Primary Processing, Storage and Valorization of Onions’ via ‘Grand Challenge on Onion Storage’.

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) monitors the retail and wholesale prices of 22 essential food commodities across the country. DoCA maintains buffer stocks of certain selected commodities to control price escalation so as to ensure availability at affordable prices for the common man. One such critical commodity is onion whose price fluctuates significantly due to several reasons.

The Onion storage grand challenge invites a proposal for developing ‘ Technologies for Primary Processing, Storage and Valorization of Onions’.
The proposed comprehensive solution for the mega issue should focus on the following:

Vertical 1: Improvements in the designs of storage structures
Vertical 2: Pre-harvesting stage
Vertical 3: Primary Processing
Vertical 4: Valorization: Value addition and utilisation of unconsumed and excess onions

MZU Incubation Centre signed MoU with DC, Serchhip

The Deputy Commissioner, Serchhip District, Govt. of Mizoram and Mizoram University Incubation Centre signed MoU for undertaking the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Support to Tribal Research Institutes (TRI)” on 1st October, 2021. The project is initiated for restructuring of the handloom cluster in Thenzawl. Mizoram University Incubation Centre will undertake a baseline survey and General Enterprising Tendency Tests (GETT) among the handloom weavers in Thenzawl, the hub of handloom weaving in Serchhip. Accordingly, entrepreneurship and business development training will be designed and administered to the weavers in batches. These weavers will be established as micro-enterprises (which can also be facilitated as SHGs under MzSRLM) and depending on their scalability, may be taken as fast-track (or accelerated) incubatees by the MZU Incubation Centre.
